Why Dharmendra’s Name Became Iconic in Kerala: For many Indian movie lovers, Dharmendra‘s is not just an actor — he is an emotion. The superstar of the 70s and 80s ruled Hindi cinema with his style, action and charm. But what many people don’t realise is that Dharmendra’s name also holds a special place in the hearts of Malayalam film audiences, even though he never acted in a Malayalam movie.
This connection began with a blockbuster comedy that still makes Malayalis laugh two decades later.
A Superstar Loved Across India
Over the past 65 years, Dharmendra worked in more than 300 films, including Punjabi and Bengali movies. His massive fan following, especially during his peak, made him one of the biggest names in Indian cinema. He was known as the “He-Man of Bollywood” because of his powerful screen presence and action roles.
Even though his stardom slowed down in the 90s and he took a break in the early 2000s, his older films continued to win new fans. Young viewers — especially Gen Z — started watching his classics and fell in love with his performances.
A Name That Became Special in Kerala
For Malayalam audiences, the name “Dharmendra” carries double meaning — the Bollywood icon and a character who became legendary.
This happened because of the superhit Malayalam comedy Pulival Kalyanam (2003), directed by Shafi. The film became a cult favourite and is still famous today for its jokes, memes and unforgettable characters like:
- Manavalan (Salim Kumar)
- Paramanandam (Jagathy Sreekumar)
- Theeppori Kuttappan (Harisree Ashokan)
But among all these characters, one stood out — P Dharmendra, played by Cochin Haneefa.
The Iconic P Dharmendra
In the film, P Dharmendra is a taxi driver from Mumbai. Manavalan hires him for a ride to Kerala, but after reaching there, he reveals he has no money. This leaves Dharmendra stuck in Kerala with him, starting a chain of hilarious events.
Cochin Haneefa’s performance made the character unforgettable. His chemistry with Salim Kumar created one of the best comedy duos in Malayalam cinema.
And who can forget his famous dialogue:
“Nee Dharavi Dharavi ennu kettittundo?”
(Have you heard about Dharavi?)
He would say this line again and again to pretend he had strong underworld links. The dialogue became a part of pop culture, with many people still using it today.

How Gen Z Discovered the Real Dharmendra
Because of this character, many Malayali Gen Z kids — who were very young in 2003 — grew up hearing the name “Dharmendra” through the Malayalam film, not Bollywood.
Later, when they saw Bollywood movies or searched online, they realised there is also a real superstar named Dharmendra. For them, the name now brings two images:
- The Bollywood action hero, Mumbai’s “crowned king”
- The Malayalam comedy character, Mumbai’s “uncrowned king”
This funny connection has kept Dharmendra’s name alive in Kerala in a unique way.
A Legacy That Lives On
Even though Dharmendra never acted in Malayalam cinema, his name became a part of it through one memorable character. With his long film career, powerful performances and evergreen charm, the legend continues to inspire audiences across India.
And thanks to Pulival Kalyanam, his name is remembered with a smile by a whole new generation.
